Fictions

  1. Propp's Character Theory

    • Based on 1920's Russion Fairy Tales.
    • The Villain
    • The Donor
    • The Magical Helper
    • The Princess
    • Her Father
    • The Dispatcher
    • The Hero
  2. Creation Myths

    • Feminism
      • The creation myth acts as a form of control, reinforcing the dominant ideology of the man being more powerful and important by using religion to make women feel as though they owe man, as it was Eve who was made from Adam's rib, and Eve that got them kicked out of Eden. Because of this, men were able to put, and keep, women in the submissive role. It also feeds our insatiiable need for knowledge and understanding of the world around us. If God created the universe then there is no need for us to look for further explanation. This worked for a while, until scientific evidence such as the Big bang and Evolution came about to challenge those ideals.
    • Location
      • The myths of creation vary from country to country. You can see evidence of where a creation myth comes from by the main aspects of the myth that reflect the landscape of the country developing it. E.g. Egypt- there is no water in the desert, so the egyption creation myth is centred around a sun god.
  3. Ideology

    • Ruling Class
      • It is the ruling class that create most fictions that are used as a form of social control to make us conform to the dominant ideologies in society. Most of this is presented through the media in modern times. eg. crime is heavily centred in the news so that people will be too afraid to go out at night and cause trouble, because they may get hurt, they will also buy security systems such as cameras which will allow the government to monitor them.
    • Origins
      • Fairy tales were originally gathered by middle class men and then filtered through their ideological beliefs. Most of the fairy tales we know today are modern adaptations of the origional Grimm Fairytales- early 1800's german brothers who went around and gathered these stories, which often involved defenseless women being saved (and raped) by the strong male hero character.
  4. Technology

    • Slender Man
    • Simms
      • By using a system that allows us to narrate the lives of these sims, we are able to live out our own fantasy. A postmodern Idea of Siulacra, we simulate real life in this and often loose the ability to descern between this fantasy we have and the reality of our real lives. Once we begin to live out these fantasies, especially on interactive sites such as Second Life where we interact with other peole sharing similar fantasies, our real life can often become boring and unable to live up to our fantasy.

  6. Discourse

    • Rules
      • Fictions can be used to set out a clear set out rules. Little Red Riding Hood is used as a story to warn children about going into the woods on their own and talking to strangers.  Three Little Pigs warns people about the dangers of wondering about on their own.

    • Vampires
    • Fairy Tales
  9. Purpose

    • Beliefs
      • In cultures, fictions have been used to confirm beliefs such as religion to emphasize important lessons and moral values.
