Changing Places- Chapter 1

1. place: a space with meaning

2. location: where a place is

3. locale: the impact of people on that place

4. sense of place: the subjective and emotional attachment people have to a place

5. space: somewhere that is unknown, unfamiliar, like looking at tourist board photos

6. rural is often associated with wholesome living and nature

7. urban is typified as hectic and stressful but more culturally sophisticated

8. Geseuchaft: the urban extreme - ever changing nature of large cosmopolitan commercial cities

9. Geminschaft: the rural extreme- a pleasant society which is inward looking an idyllic community based on kinship and supported by subsistence agriculture.

10. Home: where you can be yourself, people have a strong sense of attraction

11. Character of Place: physical and human features that help to distinguish it from another place

12. Endogenous factors: in the context of place, this refers to the characteristics of the place itself or factors which have originated internally such as the physcial geography: land use and population

13. Exogenous factors: this refers to the relationship of one place with other places and the external factors which affect this. The demographic, socio-economic and cultural characteristics of a place are shaped by shifting flows of people, resources and investments.
