an unstable nucleus becomes more stable by emitting an alpha or a beta particle or a gamma radictiation. 

an alpha particles consist of two protons and two neutrons.  When an unstable particle emits an alpha particle , its atomic number goes down by 2 and its mass goes down by 4. 

Beta radiation is ionising radiation from space from devices such as x rays 

nuclear reactions
