Radioactivity and Radiation

119 resources created by 103 users

This Radioactivity and Radiation page on GoConqr gathers community-made mind maps, quizzes, flashcards, slide sets and notes, from alpha, beta and gamma radiation and half-life to uses of radiation and background radiation. It's built for school students revising for GCSE Physics or A-level Physics, and for teachers after ready-made material. There are over 600 resources here, including more than 40 quizzes, over 360 mind maps and over 210 flashcards. Pick a mind map to get oriented, then try a quiz to find your gaps.

About Radioactivity and Radiation

GoConqr Original

What the resources cover

The resources on this page follow the topic from the structure of the atom to the uses and risks of radiation. The mind map called Nuclear Physics sets out atomic structure, with a small central nucleus of protons and neutrons surrounded by electrons, plus relative masses and charges. Atoms & ionising radiation picks up isotopes: atoms with the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.

The mind map Radioactive Decay- Mindmap covers alpha decay, where the nucleus loses two protons and two neutrons. Ionising radiation describes alpha particles as helium nuclei. Other maps look at medical uses, smoke alarms and background radiation.

Where to start

  1. Open the Radioactivity mind map. It defines half-life and activity, including activity as the number of decays per second.
  2. Move to Alpha Beta Gamma and the flashcard deck P7 Radioactivity, which asks what the three main types of radiation are and what a random event is.
  3. Read the slide set SP6b - Inside Atoms if you want the story behind the nuclear model.

Using quizzes and maps together

Read a map first, then test yourself. The quiz SP6 - Pearson Edexcel GCSE includes fill-in-the-blank questions on Rutherford's picture of the atom as mostly empty space with a tiny nucleus. IGCSE Radioactivity Quiz asks about the products of alpha and beta emission and about readings taken over time. Note which questions you miss, then go back to the matching map and reread that branch.

Quizzes such as Half Life and Radioactive decay let you practise one idea at a time.

Where it fits

This unit sits in the Atomic, Nuclear and Modern Physics strand of Physics. Most resources here are made for school-level courses, and the titles mention GCSE Physics, GCSE Science, GCSE Additional Science and A-level Physics. Exam boards name their topics differently, so choose the resources that match your course.

Teachers can pick a mind map or a slide set such as Nuclear Decay to use in class. Ready to begin? Choose a resource that suits where you are in the topic and work through it at your own pace.

Frequently asked questions

Which resource should I open first?

Start with the Radioactivity mind map. It sets out key definitions, including half-life and activity, and gives you a frame for the rest. After that, try the P7 Radioactivity flashcards for the basics on types of radiation, then a quiz to see what stuck.

What do the mind maps on this page cover?

There are over 360 mind maps. They cover atomic structure, isotopes, alpha, beta and gamma radiation, ionising radiation, half-life, medical uses, smoke alarms and background radiation. Some are short topic summaries, while others, like Physics: section 7 - radioactivity and particles, bring several subtopics together.

Are these resources free to use?

Yes. Every resource listed here is free to open, study and take, with no account needed. They were made by GoConqr users rather than by GoConqr itself. If you sign up for a free account, your quiz scores are saved and you can make your own quizzes, mind maps, flashcards and notes.

Which exams do these resources suit?

Most are aimed at school students. The listed resources mention GCSE Physics, GCSE Science, GCSE Additional Science and A-level Physics. Some quizzes name exam boards or IGCSE in the title, so check the title or first question to see if it matches your course.

How can teachers use this page?

Teachers can pick ready-made material for lessons or revision. Slide sets such as Nuclear Decay and Nuclear Equations suit explanation, while quizzes like Radiation - Alpha, Beta, Gamma work for a quick check of understanding. You can share a resource with your class once you have chosen it.

What if I can't find the topic I need?

Try a nearby title first, since the same idea can appear under different names, such as half-life, decay or ionising radiation. Notes and flashcard decks often cover a topic from a different angle. If a gap remains, you can build your own map or flashcards.
