CHEMISTRY- Particles and thermochemical systems

Optical Isomers There are four different groups attached to the Chiral Carbon They are mirror images of each other and they aren't super imposable They have identical chemical properties however they may act differently in biochemical situations. They have the same physical properties. The two isomers will rotate plane-polarised light in opposite directions.

Geometric Isomers There is a carbon double bond in the alkene is what makes it an geometric isomer if there is two different groups bonded to each carbon of the double bond. The double bond is fixed and so it cannot rotate (there is no free rotation about the double bond) If there is two different groups joined to the carbons then two different isomers can be made
