According to the theory of plate tectonics, the lithosphere is divided up into large cracks called plates. The plates are constantly moving slowly. A boundary is where the plates meet. There are nine major plates: North American, Pacific, Eurasian, African, Australian, Indian, South American, and the Antarctic.
