Act 1 scene 2 of the tempest.
Ariel mostly talks in simple language throughout the tempest making his tone very monosyllabic. This explores the idea of him being a creature and not human because of the lack of creative language shown through the way he talks. 'bet to fly, to swim, dive into fire' shows that Ariel is comfortable with the 3 elements therefore portrays the idea of ariel having a connection with fire, air and water. This adds to the idea that Ariel is a spirit and not a human .
'i flamed amazement' this is ariel recounting what he did on the boat. This is an oxyoron and almost gives the idea that Ariel is happy and excited over what he did on the boat. This also explores that Prospero has influenced in some way as Ariel has been with prospero for a long time therefore this shows the power prospero has over Ariel.
'safety in the harbour' This brings in the theme appearance vs reality as Ariel is reassuring prospero that everyone on the ship is safe therefore this makes this part of the play rather comical.
'what thou hast promised' is Ariel reminding prospero that he was promised freedom and prospero is yet to give it to him.
repetition of 'thou' shows Prosperos anger at Ariel for asking him for freedom . This portrays the power that prospero has over Ariel and also emphasizes on the idea of Ariel not being human. Ariel sentences are mostly short when it gets to this section showing that Ariel is almost scared of prospero which explores the idea of Ariel being desperate for freedom therefore will obey all of Prosperos rules. The short words and sentences such as 'no sir' shows that Ariel reliazes the control Prospero has over him. The use of 'sir' also demonstrates Prosperos higher authority to Ariel and emphasizes the idea that ariel is not human and only a creature.
