This competency standard unit requires you to undertake methods of work practice that minimises energy and material usage and to seek energy reduction strategies in the energy sector workplace. The unit seeks to minimise negative impacts on the environment.
How electricity is generated and transmitted to electricity consumers The electricity industry has four main levels: 1. generation – the production (and storage) of electricity; 2. transmission – the high voltage lines and infrastructure used to transmit electricity from generators to substations; 3. distribution – the lower voltage electricity lines and other infrastructure which transmits electricity from substations to electricity consumers; and 4. retail – how businesses sell electricity to households and businesses, including metering and billing.
Generation - AEMO
1.2.1 Generation AEMO operates the electricity dispatching system. (Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), which administers and operates the gas and electricity markets and power systems). AD: it seems that NSW power stations were government owned initially, but sold off to private / public organizations more recently. (AGL, Energy Australia [chinese owned], Delta Ele
Transmission - TransGrid
AEMO • Australian energy market operator – run the market AEMC • Australian energy market commission – make rules NEM • National electricity market NER • National electricity rules
1.2.2 Transmission In NSW, the transmission system is owned and operated by TransGrid. TransGrid is licensed under the Electricity Supply Act 1995 as the transmission operator. “In lieu of a competitive transmission market, TransGrid earns a regulated return on its investment in transmission infrastructure and services. There are two key regulatory tests that apply to TransGrid: first, a 5-yearly revenue determination to determine its regulated return on existing transmission infrastructure and proposed transmission infrastructure required to meet identified transmission needs”
Distribution - (Ausgrid, Essential Energy, and Endeavour Energy)
Electricity distributors are responsible for building and maintaining the energy infrastructure that delivers low-voltage electricity to premises across New South Wales. There are three distributors in NSW, each operating across distinct networks; they are Ausgrid, Essential Energy, and Endeavour Distributors in New South Wales are slightly different to other states in that they are not generally responsible for connecting your home to the grid. Rather in many cases, customers will need to engage their own ‘Accredited Service Provider’ (ASP) to undertake ‘contestable services’. Contestable services include underground and overhead connection services, service equipment supply, transformer services, switchgear services, augmentations and design work.
What NSW distributors do:
1: Manage shared electricity infrastructure
2: Repair damage to networks and restore power after outages
3: Design tariffs that determine the way you pay for power
4: Manage streetlights
What NSW distributors dont do:
1: Construct/repair individual premise connections2: Repair electrical faults not related to the shared network3: Provide Metering Services (non-legacy

Retail
Households and small businesses buy electricity from a retailer, not the wholesale market. Retailers offer households and small businesses a retail contract for supplying electricity
