The (data protection act) DPA 1998
Protects your data from other people and allows a person to see a copy of any data held about them
Data encryption
Converts plain text into something that can not be understood and can only be accessed with a key
The Caesar Cipher
Encrypts using a shift key.
Encryption within a network
Data is encrypted with a cipher and can only be unlocked and interpreted if the recipient of the data has a key.
Authentication
is the process of identifying a user or a client attempting to access a resource.
This can be done through the use of a username and a password
most systems require users to be logged in to perform actions - this can done through typed methods or biometrics.
Firewall
is used to control and monitor the exchange of data across a network.
The monitoring is governed on a set of security rules.
Firewalls can do many things to protect malicious data from entering a system, and from information being intercepted
Proxy Server Filtering - the firewall intercepts all messages within the network, hiding the network address.
Packet Filtering - the firewall looks at the data in each packet entering/leaving the network
Application gateway filtering - applying security methods and blocking protocol services, i.e. FTP
MAC (media access control) Address
All electronic devices have a MAC address.
MAC address filtering allows the identifier of devices to be entered. If this device attempts to join a network, it is immediately rejected.
Mobile Hotspots
devices can be found on a network using their MAC address.
The bottom number is the registered IP address and the top number is known as the MAC address - this is an alphanumeric string that is unique identifier for a device on the network
