TEXTBOOKS ANALYSIS.

Name of Textbook: Primary Communication Box.

Target population: Designed to children around 7 - 12 years old (Primary).

What

sort of approach does the book appear to adopt?

The speaking and

listening are the approaches that the book adopts because the students are

children and English is focus on communication. Limited reading and writing.

2- Does one approach predominate? Which?

Support your answer.

Communicative

approach because the book highlight a lot of vocabulary, with the help of

pictures and different activities makes students use English language.

3- How are new teaching points graded?

Each lesson has an

activity to remind the before class and to get continue to the new topic. The

evaluation of the lesson is the result variable depending of the activity, due

to the book is focus on communication; the evaluation is how students share

their knowledge with their partners or what they are listening at the end show

their drawing because it’s instructional, etc.

4- Is the organization of the course book

linear or cyclical?

The organization is lineal;

the entire book presents in its lessons the speaking and listening skills. the book

is dividing by lessons; each lesson has a suggestion for teacher how to develop

his/her class similar as a lesson plan because it has a “before class” or warm

up, “In class” or development and finally it gets an “option” or closing.

5- Are there any special pages of units for

revision, self testing or reference?

There are pages for

coloring, cut and paste but there’s not a space for revision, self testing or

reference.

6- What are the art work and layout like? Are

they attractive? Are they useful or only decorative?

Personally, I don’t

like the physical appearance of the book because there aren’t colors, the

entire book is black and white however, point in its favor, children love

coloring and the book allow it.

7- Does the book induce examples of authentic

language and material? Give examples.

The book has not

examples about how to develop the activities, however, give to teacher tool

about how to explain. Also, it is not authentic material because it’s

predetermining with cartoons and flash cards.

8- Does the book include workbooks, tests,

tapes, videos, on line sources etc…? Are they useful? Give examples.

The book includes a

CD, it’s useful because help to children to familiarize with native speakers

not only the teacher. Also, the book includes many worksheets which children

can cut, coloring, etc.

9- Is the book easy to follow? Why? Does it

contain an index?

Yes, the book is easy

to follow but I think of this book is made for teachers than children, because

it shows as a lesson plan directed to teachers. It contains an index that says

the activity title, language focus, activity type, time and logistics.

10- Does the material have a specific cultural

setting or is it non culture –specific?

The material has non

culture-specific.

11- Can you spot any

notable omissions? Will you have to supplement the book in any way?

The book should have

revision page, colors. The activities proposed are innovating and it’s

according to the age.

12- How is each unit

titled? Is it clear? Functional?

Yes, each lesson has

its title, clear, practical.

13- How is new

language presented?

The new language is

presented in attractive drawings, students can feel familiarize with the

content it does easy the acquisition of the new vocabulary.

14- Does the

presentation of new activities force the teacher to follow the unit sequence of

the book?

The book has a

sequence, it starts with easy topics and then it becomes a little bit hard, I

like in some activities the book tries to remind to students past topics.

15- How new language

is presented in each unit? Is it appropriate for your children?

Absolutely, the book presents

the new language according to the age of children, it is very visual.

16- What kind of

practice activities are there? Are they motivating and meaningful?

There are total

physical response activities motivate to children and do meaningful the

language because they can put in practice.

17- How much variety

of activities is there?

There are role plays,

coloring dictation, card games, team games, puzzles, listening games.

18- How is the

vocabulary presented?

The vocabulary is

presented in the beginning of the lesson, in the left side, but also in the

activities that proposed the book.

19- Is there an

opportunity for reviewing at the end of each unit?

Yes, as I said

before, the lessons are made to follow in a new topic, however, each lesson

contain something about a past lesson.

20- How are the

different skills treated? Are they integrated?

The speaking and

listening are integrated in each lesson, in some cases it incorporates a little

writing but the reading it is not presented.
