DIVORCE

There has been huge changes withing family patterns in Britain since 19th century . One example of changes within the family patters is evidenced from increasing amounts of divorce rates. Since 1960's there has been huge number of increases in divorce rates and in the number of applications coming from women .7 out of 10 application for divorce comes from women's. This significant increase is due to many reasons such as changes in laws,secularisation, rising expectation of marriage, declining stigma and finally changes in women position .

Juliet Michael and jack goody note that an important changes in 1960's were decline stigma as before divorce was seen as a shameful action . Decline of stigma was effective to make divorce more socially acceptable and makes couples less willing to solve their big issues and relay on divorce.

changes in the position of women is the most important factor which has affected the divorce rates and this could be proved through the statics that in 1959 only 47% women worked whereas in 2005 this was 70% .which shows that as women were allowed to work they got their economical freedom and relay less on their husbands and are more confident that that they could have a decent life even if they divorce as they got a job .

Jessie Bernard argues that the increase of divorce rate and increase in petitions coming from women is due to the realization of of patriarchal marriages and this is a way of showing that they reject this .

Securlarisation is another important factor for divorce . People have become less religion influenced and causes them to give decisions more quickly and tend to stick to their decision as nothing influences them to not do it .More over churches have become less strict on divorce.The rising expectation of marriage is another issue that influences the rate of divorce in the recent years .

Ronald Fletcher argues that the rising expectation of marriages is causing people to be less willing to tolerate unhappy marriages.Further people are focusing on romantic love marriage and when this idea of romantic love dies out within the marriage it causes divorce and increase and this idea was supported by Graham Allan .
