MOTION IN ONE DIMENSION

• When a body does not change its position with respect to its surroundings,the body is said to be in rest.
• Example. A chair lying in a room is in the state of rest,because it does not change its position with respect to the surroundings of the room.
• Motion.
• When a body changes its position with respect to its surroundings ,it is said to in motion. Example. A car is changing its position with respect to trees,houses etc,is an example of a body in the state of motion.
• SCALARS and VECTORS.
• The physical quantities which are expressed in magnitude only are called scalar quantities.They do not have any direction.
• Examples. Mass,length,time,area,volume,density,energy,power.temperature,current etc,are all scalars,
• Vectors are those physical quantities which are expressed in magnitude as well as direction are called vectors.
• Examples, Displacement,velocity,acceleration,retardation,momentum,impulse,force are examples of vectors.
• The point is also to be noted that scalars can be added by simple arithmetic means and can not
• be plotted on graph paper. Vectors can be added using laws of geometry and can be plotted on graph paper.
