Curitiba Brazil - SUSTAINABLE LIVING
Aiming to be a sustainable city
The overall aims are to improve the environment, reduce pollution and waste and improve the quality of life of the residents
The city has a budget of $600 million to spend every year
It is working to sustainability by reducing car use, lots of open spaces and conserved natural environments, good recycling schemes
Reducing car use- There is a good bus system used by more than 1.4 mil passengers per day. Cheap fair - good for poor residents, bus only lanes, over 200 km of bike paths in the city. Bike and bus schemes have caused car use to be 25% lower than other cities in Brazil.
Open spaces and conserved natural environments - Green space has increased from 0.5m2 per person in 1970 to 52m2 per person in 1990. There are over 1000 parks and natural areas - many in areas prone to flooding so land is still useful, residents have planted 1.5 million trees, builders are given tax breaks in the city if their development includes green space.
Good recycling schemes - 70% of rubbish is recycled - 1200 trees saved per day, residents in poorer areas are given food and bus tickets as a reward for bringing their recycling to a collection centre.
