Afghanistan was seen as buffer between [blank_start]Iran[blank_end] and the USSR as the USSR did not want Islam to spread across their borders. The Kabul revolution, [blank_start]1978[blank_end], was the overthrow of the Afghan royal family for a new communist president, Mohammed Taraki, who became an ally of the [blank_start]USSR[blank_end].
