• Population Growth
• Always increasing at a faster rate
• More
• People (Natural
• Increase)
• = High Birth Rate + Low Death
• Rate
• Two factors affect population size:
• Birth
• Rate: No. live babies, per 1000, per yr
• Death
• Rate: No. deaths, per 1000, per yr
• Less People (Natural
• Decrease)
• =
• High Death Rate + Low Birth Rate
• Population affected by migration
• 1
• Five stages of Population Growth
• Birth & Death rates
• differ from country to country
• Slow
• or fast
• Shown
• in Demographic Transition model (DTM)
• 1. Total population
• low & balanced:
• o
• High birth & death rates
• 2. Total population rising:
• o
• Death rates falling
• o Birth rates still high - improving health care
• & sanitation
• 3. Rapid Natural
• increase high:
• o Small gap between
• birth & death rates
• o Availability of
• contraception
• o
• Less children needed to work - mechanisation
• of farming
• 4. Total population
• high:
• o Balanced by low birth
• & death rate.
• o
• Birth control widely available & desire
• for smaller families
• 5. Total population high,
• rapidly falling:
• o Ageing population
• o Continued desire
• for smaller families & to have children later in life
