Chapter 2 Concepts
Flashcards do conjunto (5)
- 1Chapter 2 Natural SelectionThe process whereby physical & behavioural characteristics which enable survival & the genes that code for these are passed onto descendants. Process leads to adaption.
Barrett-Individuals show variation in behaviour, structure & psychological traits. Part of these variations are inherited through genes. Variations of a trait allow a person to compete more effectively for resources.
Important as provides explanation as to why adaptive behaviours evolved that improve chance of survival. - 2Chapter 2 Sexual SelectionForm of natural selection concerned with reproductive success. Selection of traits that lead to reproductive success are more likely to be passed on.
Trivers-Intrasexual-competition between members of the same sex for a mate, this leads to traits that aid this e.g size/strength. Intersexual-mate selection based on physical charactertistics that show healthiness e.g peacock feathers or behaviour e.g good defender of territory.
Important as explains differences between male/female characteristics & why these adaptions may have evolved. - 3Chapter 2 Reciprocal AltruismTerm used in evolutionary psychology to explain the evolution of behaviour that benefits other who are not kin & where the altruist benefits directly. Also known as direct reciprocity.
Prisoners Dilemma Study-2 players, can either co-operate or not in altruistic act. If both co-operate then both gain. But if 1 co-operates but no the other then the one not co-operating benefits.
Important as helps understand why people behave altruictically. - 4Chapter 2 Reciprocal AltruismTerm used in evolutionary psychology to explain the evolution of behaviour that benefits other who are not kin & where the altruist benefits directly. Also known as direct reciprocity.
