Flashcards
Atomic structure

Flashcards do conjunto (7)
- 1Plum pudding model- solid sphere of mass
- positive charge spread evenly throughout
- small individual electrons
- 2The atomic model- has a nucleus in the centre containing protons and neutrons
- negative electrons move around the nucleus in rings
- 3The history of the atom- Dalton - 1803
- Thomson - 1904
- Rutherford - 1911
- Bohr - 1913
- 4Mass number and Atomic number- all atoms of a particular element have the same number of protons
- the number of protons in an atom is called the atomic number
- the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom is called the mass number
- 5Protons, neutrons & electrons- protons are positively charged and are in the nucleus
- neutrons have no charge and are in the nucleus
- electrons have a negative charge and move around the nucleus
- 6Ions- atoms have no overall electrical charge
- ions with a positive or negative charge are formed when atoms gain or lose electrons
- 7Isotopes- an isotope is an atom of the same element so has the same number of protons
- it has a different number of neutrons so a different mass number
