- 1What is the order of the planets beginning with the one closest to the sun?Mercury- My
Venus- Very
Earth- Eager
Mars- Monkey
Jupiter- Just
Saturn- Served
Uranus- Us
Neptunes- Noodles - 2Why might one planet have a stronger gravitational field than another?Because it has a larger mass
- 3What are nebulae?Huge clouds of dust, hydrogen and helium gas
- 4What element is the Sun mostly made up on?Hydrogen
- 5What force keeps the planets in orbit around the Sun?Gravity
- 6What is the relationship between the distance a planet is away from the Sun and the time it takes for it to orbit the Sun?The closer the planet is to the Sun, the less time it takes for it to orbit the Sun
- 7What happens when the hydrogen inside a star starts to run out?Nuclear Fusion slows down and the force of gravity causes the star to contract. As it contracts, it compresses at the core and the temperature rises.
- 8What is nuclear fusion? The process in which 2 hydrogen nuclei join or fuse together to form a new nucleus of helium. This is only one of the fusion reactions in the Sun that release energy.
- 9The more masive the star, the ..................................... the range of elements created inside it.Greater
- 10What are the main stages in the life cycle star like the Sun?1) Nebula
2) Protostar
3) Sun (main sequence star)
4) Red giant
5) White dwarf
6) Black dwarf - 11What does it mean when the forces inside a star are in equilibrium? The force pushing outwards due to fusion reactions and the force of gravity pulling back into the core are balanced and the star is stable.
- 12How does a nebula become a protostar?Over millions of years, the force of gravity pulls the nebula together and as the vast cloud compresses it gets hotter and hotter until the core begins to glow and it becomes a protostar
- 13What is a satellite?Celestial body orbiting the Earth or other planet
- 14What are the stages of the life cycle of massive stars1) Large nebula
2) Star
3) Red super Giant
3) Supernova
4) Neutron star/ Black hole - 15When does a star form a red super giant? When all the hydrogen ahs been used up and the star expands to become a red super giant.
- 16Why do massive stars have shorter lifespans than smaller stars like the Sun?Because they use up their hydrogen at a much faster rate
- 17Name 10 elements created inside a red super giant.• Hydrogen
• Helium
• Nitrogen
• Carbon
• Oxygen
• Neon
• Magnesium
• Silicon
• Sulphur
• Nickel
• Iron - 18When a light source is moving away form you, why does the light become redder?Because the waves appear to stretch and the wavelength becomes longer and the frequency decreases
- 19What is a dwarf planet? It is a speherical planet that orbits the Sun but cannot clear other material out of its own orbit because the gravitation field is not strong enough
- 20Give 3 reasons why Pluto is difficult to see from Earth.1) It is too small
2) Too far away
3) Doesn't reflect light so is too dark to see - 21What is the relationship between the mass of a star and its temeprature? The larger the mass, the higher the temeprature
- 22When does a star move out the main sequence and become a red giant? When all the hydrogen has been used to form helium and it moves out the main sequence. The outer layers are pushed out so many time the star's original size. the star ahs expanded to become a red giant.
- 23How does a supernova occur? When the star finally reaches a point when fusion stops and the core collapses causing a giant explosion, called a supernova
- 24Under what condition would the star form a neutron star or a black hole?If the surviving core is 1.5-3 solar masses, it contracts to become a very tiny dense neutron star. If the core is much greater than 3 solar masses, the core contracts to become a black hole.
- 25What is the Crab Nebula? The remnants of a supernova
- 26What is teh core of a red super giant ade up of?Nickel and iron
- 27Why can heavier elements only be created by a supernova?because the temperature is high enough
- 28What becomes the nursery for the next generation of star formation?Nebulae
- 29Name 2 elements that can be formed in a supernova.* Uranium
* Gold - 30What does the force of the explosion of a supernova do to the elements formed by fusion processes? It scatters them into space with other clouds of dust and gas to form a new nebula
- 31What is gravity?A force that attracts all things with mass towards one another
- 32What does red-shift mean?Light from galaxies moving away from the Earth had longer wavelengths, shifting towards the red end of the spectrum. This was named red-shift. Black lines in the spectrum of light from a star are caused when atoms in a gas like helium absorb certain wavelengths. In the spectrum of distant stars, the pattern of lines had shifted towards the red end of the spectrum.
