3Which of the following are examples of primary energy sources?

4Fossil fuels are formed over [blank_start]millions[blank_end] of years by the decay of dead organisms. When they are [blank_start]burned[blank_end] they produce a number of [blank_start]pollutants[blank_end]. A major pollutant formed is carbon [blank_start]dioxide[blank_end], which contributes to global [blank_start]warming[blank_end] and [blank_start]climate[blank_end] change.
- Amillions
- Bpollutants
- Cdioxide
- Dclimate
- Ewarming
- Fburned
5What is energy measured in?
- AJoules
- BWatts
- CVolts
6The equation below shows the relationship between [blank_start]power[blank_end] (watt, W), voltage (volt, V) and [blank_start]current[blank_end] (ampere, A).
power = [blank_start]voltage[blank_end] x current- Apower
- Bcurrent
- Cvoltage
7A 230 V kettle has a current of 10 A. What is the power of the kettle?
- A230 W
- B2300 W
- C23 W
8The amount of electrical energy transferred to an appliance depends on.....
- A...its power
- B...its voltage
- C...the length of time it is switched on
9energy transferred (kilowatt-hour, kWh) = power (kilowatt, kW) x time (hour, h)
- ATrue
- BFalse
10Energy cannot be [blank_start]created[blank_end] or destroyed. It can only be [blank_start]transferred[blank_end] from one form to another, or moved. Energy that is "[blank_start]wasted[blank_end]", like the heat energy from an electric lamp, does not disappear. Instead, it is transferred to its [blank_start]surroundings[blank_end] and spreads out so much that it becomes difficult to do anything [blank_start]useful[blank_end] with it.
- Acreated
- Btransferred
- Cwasted
- Dsurroundings
- Euseful
11A low-energy electric lamp is marked "20 W" and gives out 10 W of light. How efficient is the lamp?
- A100%
- B50%
- C200%
12The efficiency of a device will always be more than 100%
- ATrue
- BFalse
13Which part of this nuclear power station is the turbine?

- AA
- BB
- CC
14Put these statements in the correct order:
1. The electricity goes to the transformers to produce the correct voltage.
2. The steam turns the turbine.
3. Heat is released from a primary energy source fuel and boils the water to make steam .
4. The turbine turns a generator and electricity is produced.- A3, 2, 4, 1
- B1, 2, 3, 4
- C2, 3, 1, 4
- D4, 1, 3, 2
15Generators work using a process called [blank_start]electromagnetic[blank_end] induction.
One way of generating a current is to move a [blank_start]magnet[blank_end] into or out of a coil. This movement causes a [blank_start]voltage[blank_end] to be induced across the ends of the coil. If the coil is part of a complete [blank_start]circuit[blank_end] then a current will be induced in the circuit. If this is done over and over again, an alternating current (a.c.) is [blank_start]generated[blank_end]. An alternating current is an electric current that reverses [blank_start]direction[blank_end] many times a second.
It is not practical to generate large amounts of [blank_start]electricity[blank_end] by passing a magnet in and out of a coil of wire. Instead, generators induce a current by [blank_start]spinning[blank_end] a coil of wire inside a magnetic field, or by spinning a magnet inside a coil of wire.- Aelectromagnetic
- Bmagnet
- Cvoltage
- Dcircuit
- Egenerated
- Fdirection
- Gelectricity
- Hspinning
16The radiation from the material can damage the cells of the person directly. This is damage by contamination.
- ATrue
- BFalse
17There are issues around the [blank_start]distribution[blank_end] of electricity through the country as well as with the generation of it.
The electricity we use in our homes is distributed through the [blank_start]National Grid[blank_end]. All power stations are connected to the National Grid, who own and [blank_start]maintain[blank_end] the high-voltage electricity distribution through the UK.
Often electricity is needed far from where the power station is. As the current [blank_start]flows[blank_end] along wires to where it is needed, it [blank_start]heats[blank_end] the wires meaning energy is lost.
To reduce the energy lost when distributing electricity, a [blank_start]high[blank_end] voltage is used. The mains supply voltage in our homes is 230 volts. Large currents would be needed to distribute electricity at 230 volts. This would heat wires and so the loss of energy would be [blank_start]large[blank_end].
So, the National Grid distributes electricity at a much [blank_start]higher[blank_end] voltage. This means a lower [blank_start]current[blank_end] is needed and so less energy is [blank_start]lost[blank_end] due to heating.- Adistribution
- BNational Grid
- Cflows
- Dheats
- Ehigh
- Flarge
- Gmaintain
- Hhigher
- Icurrent
- Jlost
18Give an example of a finite energy source.
- AWind
- BCrude oil
- CSolar
- DBiomass
19Advantages to Nuclear Power
Unlike [blank_start]fossil[blank_end] fuels, nuclear fuels do not produce [blank_start]carbon[blank_end] dioxide.
Disadvantages to Nuclear Power
Like fossil fuels, nuclear fuels are non-[blank_start]renewable[blank_end] energy resources. And if there is an accident, large amounts of [blank_start]radioactive[blank_end] material could be released into the environment. In addition, nuclear [blank_start]waste[blank_end] remains radioactive and is [blank_start]hazardous[blank_end] to health for thousands of years. It must be [blank_start]stored[blank_end] safely.- Afossil
- Bcarbon
- Crenewable
- Dradioactive
- Ewaste
- Fhazardous
- Gstored
20In the atoms of a nuclear fuel, energy is released from:
- Achanges in electrons
- Bchanges in the nucleus
- Creactions between atoms
