Slide 2

Tourism is a growing industry - people are having longer and more holidays. Here are some of the reasons why, outlined in the next few slides.

Slide 3

People now have a larger disposable income than before, so they can afford to go on more holidays. Companies and workplaces give more paid holidays than before. This means there is a bigget perioid of paid free time, so they can go on holiday more. Travel has become cheaper (particularly air travel) so it is more affordable. Holiday providers now use the internet to sell their products directly, again, making them cheaper and more affordable.

Some areas are also becoming more popular than before because...

Slide 5

Improvements in transport have made it quicker and easier to get to places - for example, there are no week-long boat trips to AUstralia. Countries in more unusual tourist destinations like the Middle East and Africa have got better at marketing themselves for attractions. This means people are much more aware of them. Many countries have invested in infrastructure for tourism, making them more attractive to visitors.

Slide 7

Slide 8

    Mountains
People are attracted to mountain areas by the beautiful scenery and activities like walking, climbing, skiing and snowboarding. Popular destinations include the Dolomites, Alps and the Rockies.

Slide 9

    Coasts
People are attracted to coastal areas by beaches and activities such as swimming, snorkelling, fishing and water skiing. Popular destinations include Spain, the Caribbean and Thailand.

Slide 10

    Tourism + The Economy
Tourism is important to the economies of many countries. It creates jobs for local people, which helps the economy grow. It also increases the income of other businesses that supply the tourist industry, such as farmers who supply hotels with food. This means that tourism is important to the economies of both rich and poor parts of the world - for example, Tourism in France generated 35 billion euros in 2006 and 2 million jobs. Poorer countries tend to be more dependent on the tourism industry than the richer ones. For example, tourism contributes to 3% of the UK's GDP, but 15% of Kenya's.
