Definition of Mechanical waves? Waves that require a medium (matter) through which to travel as they transfer energy. Definition of a Transverse wave? Wave energy causes the matter in the medium to move up/down or back/forth at right angles to the direction of wave travel. What are some examples of Transverse waves? Light waves and water waves. Definition of Compressional/Longitudinal waves? Matter in the medium moves back and forth in the same direction of wave travel. (parallel) Examples of Compressional/Longitudinal waves? Gamma waves, visible light, ultra violet (UV), x-rays, gamma rays, radio waves, infrared waves.
