WLAN

Wireless Local Area Network

LAN : all devices communicate wirelessly

Tree Topology

Combines bus and star topology

If bus cable fails, star will still communicate

Widely spread

Too much cable

Network Topology

All devices are arranged in a network

Wired networks: shows how computers are linked

Wireless networks: shows how computers communicate with each other

Star Topology

Uses central connection (point hub/switch)

Lots of wire

Easy to add devices without disruption

Fault tolerant

Bus Topology

Involves a 'backbone' cable which it realises on

Slow for large networks

Easy to add devices

LAN

Local area network

Single building

Cable, Wireless, Infrared

Less Expensive

WANS

Covers wide areas

Expensive

Line rental needed

Switch

More intelligent than hub (join computers to a network)

Looks at data to secede where it goes

Speeds up networks
