Karten in diesem Stapel (33)
- 1What is God?They are spirital and transendent, compleatly different from everything within this world.
- 2OmnipotentAll powerful
- 3OmniscientAll knowing
- 4EternalAlpha and omega, has always existed
- 5ImmanentEverywhere, all of the time
- 6BenevolentAll loving
- 7What is the cosmological argument?A theory, popularised by St. Thomas Aquinas that supports the idea that God creates the universe ex nihilo (out of nothing)
- 8Premise one of the Cosmological ArgumentEverything that exists has a cause
- 9Premise two of the Cosmological ArgumentNothing that exists is its own cause
- 10Premise three of the Cosmological ArgumentAn infinite chain of causes is impossible
- 11Conclusion one of the Cosmological ArgumentSo, there must have been a first cause of the universe
- 12Premise four of the Cosmological ArgumentThe first cause of the universe must be a necessary thing or it itself would need a cause
- 13Premise five of the Cosmological ArgumentSince everything in the universe is contingent, the necessary first cause must lie outwith the universe
- 14Conclusion two of the Cosmological ArgumentSo the necessary first cause is what we know by the idea of God
- 15What is the Kalam Argument? An old Islamic version of the Cosmological Argument which was popularised by modern philosopher William Lane Craig
- 16What is the difference between the Cosmological Argument and the Kalam Argument? The Cosmological Argument talks about the chain of cause and effect, whereas the Kalam Argument talks about the universe being finite instead of infinite
- 17What is the similarity between the Cosmological Argument and the Kalam Argument? The Cosmological Argument states that an infinite chain of cause is impossible so the universe must have had a cause outwith the laws of the universe which the Kalam Argument agrees with saying that the universe must be finite as infinite things cannot be added to and therefor the universe must have had a beginning outwith the laws of the universe itself.
- 18What are the strengths of the Cosmological Argument? It is based on indisputable premises.
It is logical.
It fits with current scientific ideas. - 19Why is the Cosmological Argument based on indisputable premises?Aquinas believed that premise one and two were clearly beyond dispute as (within our current knowledge) everything in the universe is contingent (requiring something else to exist).
- 20Why is the Cosmological Argument logical?Aquinas believed that premise three was based on a logical truth, its is impossible to imagine a chain of causes going back infinitely so there must have been a first cause to start it all. And as God is transcendent they fit this idea.
- 21Why is the Cosmological Argument based on current scientific premises? The big bang suggests that the world is finite therefor there would need to be a first cause and the ambiguity of God means they fit with this better than anything else within our knowledge.
- 22What is the Teleological Argument? The belief that the complexity, pattern and order of the universe is the cause of a greater power
- 23What did Aristotle say that supported the Teleological Argument?Aristotle believed that everything in the universe has a telos and that this occurs naturally (Aquinas took this on and said that nature must be guided by some intelligent being)
- 24A posterioriBased on our experience of the world
- 25DeductiveMoves from a general claim to a specific conclusion; premises can lead to a certain conclusion if the argument is presented correctly
- 26InductiveMoves from a specific experience of the world to a general conclusion; premises give support to the conclusion but do not necessitate it. Conclusions can only at best be highly probable.
- 27Natural TheologyA branch of theology which argues from the natural world to reason for characteristics of God
- 28"Telos" (Greek)End; purpose; goal; target
- 29Design qua purposeArguments which seek to show that the universe has direction and a goal
- 30Design qua regularityArguments from a general pattern of the order in the Universe
- 31Analogical ArgumentWhere two things are alike in one respect then they are likely to be alike in some relevantly similar respect
- 32Fallacy of compositionIt is impossible to draw conclusions about the whole on the basis of the parts
- 33Ockham's razorA philosophical principle that the simplest explanation is the one most likely to be correct
