- 1What is the purpose of the CPU?The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the part of a computer system that is commonly referred to as the "brains" of a computer. The CPU is also known as the processor or microprocessor. The CPU is responsible for executing a sequence of stored instructions called a program.
- 2Explain 'FETCH'The first step the CPU carries out is to FETCH some data and instructions from the main memory then store them in its own registers.
The CPU uses an address bus to send a signal to main memory to request the information it needs. - 3Explain 'DECODE'The next step of the CPU is to make sense of the instructions it has just FETCHED. The instructions are received into the CPU on a DATA bus. This process is called 'DECODE'. The CPU decodes the the instruction and prepares various areas within the chip for the next step.
- 4Explain 'EXECUTE'This is the part of the cycle when data processing actually takes place. The instruction is carried out upon the data (EXECUTED).
- 5What is the Control Unit (CU)The control unit (CU) has 3 main jobs.
1. It controls data around the CPU
2. It controls and monitors the flow of data between the CPU and other components such as input devices, memory , graphics card.
3. It executes instructions provided by the program. - 6What is the Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)?The ALU handles the data processed inside the CPU. It consists of two types of processing.
1. Arithmetic operations. It performs standard arithmetic operations such as
- + / *
2. Logic operations, it deals with logic and comparisons such as 'is this value greater than that value?' The answer is always either ' true or false'.
