- 1Define SoftwareThe programs and other operating information used by a computer
- 2Why is System and Application software needed?System software is software needed to run computer hardware and application programs. App software can be categorised as general purpose, special purpose or custom written software.
- 3Purpose of Utililty softwareSoftware designed to optimise the performance of the computer or perform tasks such as back up files etc.
- 4Purpose of Hardware DriversUsed to run certain pieces of hardware that are not compatible with the computer by default.
- 5Purpose of Backup utlitiesBackup Utilities are what are used to back up the computer onto off-board memory.
- 6What translator translates code into amchine code?An assembler translates the assembly language program into machine code for execution.
- 7How would mobile phone OS devs use a virtual machine?A virtual machine can be defined as any instance where software is used to take on the function of the machine. This can be used to test the mobile OS without having to install it onto a brand new phone.
- 8Games console devs uses mod version of linux. This is open source.Open source will help as games companies can look directly at the linux code in order to best optimize their game for that specific OS.
- 9What is open source softwareThis is software that is licensed for use but no charge for the licence. It is distributed with the source code so anybody can modify it. Developers can sell the software they have created from it but any new software created from the oopen source softawre must also be open source.
- 10Describe machine code and assembly languageassembly code uses mnemonics to represent the operation codes and addresses. Machine code, however, was the first language used to enter programs by early programmers this is composed of digital binary numbers. 1s and 0s.
- 11What is meant by the term interruptAn interrupt is a signal from a software program, hardware device or an internal clock to the CPU.
- 12What happens in the CPU when there is an interruptThe CPU will suspend the execution of the program being run or process and disable all interrupts of lower priority
- 13What is meant by pagingPaging is when memory is divided into fixed sized pages of 4kb each and a process currently in memory can be held in several non-contiguous pages
- 14What is meant by segmentationThis is the logical division of address which depends on the program structure
- 15Similarity between eachBoth techniques involve splitting up primary memory into smaller sections. Both techniques try to make maximum use of RAM.
- 16Difference between bothPaging is used to get a large linear address space without having to buy more physical memory. Segmentation allows programs and data to be broken up into logically independent address spaces and to aid sharing and protection.
- 17How can an OS overcome the issue of the physical memory being fullThere can be copression software which will compress files to smaller memory in order to save them for greater storage.
- 18Why is memory management so necessary? This allows the user to run multiple different applications at once. Each application must be stored in memory simultaneously. this is controlled by the OS
- 19Paging used in memory managementPaging can be used to divide memory into equal sized pages. It uses mapping to store a link between the physical memory address and logical address space
