  1. 1what are the stages of the systems life cycleFEASIBILITY STAGE: deciding whether problem can possibly be solved, given current resources, time constraints and costs
REQUIREMENTS STAGE: stage where you work out what the finished solution needs to do
ANALYSIS AND DESIGN STAGE: working out how the solution should go about doing this
IMPLEMENTATION: where we write the actual code
    TESTING: Checking it actually works
DEPLOYMENT: Installing finished solution in the target environment
EVALUATION: checking with user whether solution is complete.
MAINTENANCE: making sure the software continues to function properly by improvements, patches and updates other releases
  2. 2what is the waterfall lifecycle model?used for low risk projects with little user input
it is a cycle in which each step is completed one at a time from beginning to end. Each step has specific outputs that lead to the next step.
it is possible to return to the previous step but the developer must work back in chronological stage.
user/customer involvement only happens at analysis stage and evaluation
changes at later stages can be expensive as changes need to be made elsewhere
  3. 3what is rapid application development?for large projects
it is the method that produces successive prototypes of the software until a final version is produced and approved.
following approval of feasibility, continuously refined prototypes are released, with aid of user involvement for feedback
involves focus groups to gather info than requirement doc
user may decided they are satisfied or require improvements which leads to iteration
  4. 4what is the spiral modelfor large projects high risk
the spiral model uses the similar structure to the waterfall model but involves idea of developing software in iterative stages.
at the beginning, the requirements are defined and then they initiate the development of first prototype. each cycle loop produces a refined prototype.
Steps are repeated until final release
    cumulative cost increases per loop.
it is risk driven and the risk decides which method it will be developed with.
its follows an Analysis to risk assesment to build to evaluate cycle
  5. 5what is the agile method?this is the method used to support a system development process that is not taking place in a linear sequence. for example, while development is in the implementation stage, developer may need to work on something in another aspect.
it involves gathering feedback from user throughout the development in order to see any changes of requirement during the process so changes can be made iteratively to each prototype
developers ensure both themselves and the user understand the system
    (see diagram in book)
each refined edition of the product is built in iterations called sprints
they are short, time limited periods when a team has to complete a set amount of work.
  6. 6what is extreme programming methodology?extreme programming is a method that aims to produce high quality software and and ensure responsiveness to changing customer requirements.
it mirrors agile methodology in the sense that it involves frequent releases of software iteratively for customer inspection.
it encourages productivity and a feeling of importance among all parties involved
  7. 7what are tasks carried out during analysis?stakeholders are asked what they require
analysing strength and weakness of current system
understand the type of data being used in this case and inputs and outputs
discuss any future development plans with the stakeholder
  8. 8what are the benefits and disadvantages of the waterfall methods+clearly documented
    +therefore straightforward and manageable
    - Lack of flexibility
-No risk analysis so nothing to mitigate potential costly errors
    -Limited user involvement
  9. 9what are the benefits and disadvantages of the spiral method?+Thorough risk-analysis and mitigation.
    +Caters to changing user needs
    +produces prototypes
-Expensive to hire risk assessors and constantly prototype
-Lack of focus on code efficiency
  10. 10what are the benefits and disadvantages of the Rapid method?+Caters to changing user requirements
+ Focus on core features, reducing development time
    -Poorer quality documentation
-Fast pace may reduce code quality
  11. 11what are the benefits and disadvantages of the extreme programming method?+Produces high quality code
+ high user involvement so high usability
    - High cost of two people working
    on one project
    - heavy focus on teamwork and their may be issues with differing levels of understanding
  12. 12what are the benefits and disadvantages of the agile method?+Flexible to changing requirements
    + Regular user involvement
    +high quality code
    - Poor documentation
    consistent interaction between user
and developer can be time consuming
