  1. 1Central Processing UnitThe CPU is responsible for executing a sequence of stored instructions called a program. This program will take inputs from an input device, process the input in some way and output the results to an output device.
  2. 2FetchThe first step the CPU carries out is to fetch some data and instructions (program) from main memory then store them in its own internal temporary memory areas. These memory areas are called registers.
  3. 3DecodeThe next step is for the CPU to make sense of the instruction it has fetched. This process is called decode. The CPU is designed to understand a specific set of commands. These are called the instruction set of the CPU. each make of CPU has a different instruction set.
  4. 4ExecuteThis is the part of the cycle when data processing actually takes place. the instruction is carried out upon the data (executed). The result of this processing is stored in yet another register. Once the execute stage is complete, the CPU sets itself up to begin another cycle once more.
  5. 5Random access memory (RAM)RAM is a fast temporary type of memory in which programs, applications and data are stored. here are some examples of whats stored in RAM:
    >The operating system
    >Applications
    >The graphical user interface (GUI)
If a computer loses power all memory stored on the RAM is lost
  6. 6Read only memory (ROM)ROM is memory that cannot be changed by a program or user. ROM retains its memory even after the computer is turned off. for example, ROM stores the instructions for the computer to start up when it is turned on again.
  7. 7RegisterIn computer architecture, a processor register is a small amount of storage available as part of a digital processor, such as a central processing unit (CPU). Such registers are typically addressed by mechanisms other than main memory and can be accessed faster.
  8. 8Cache MemoryCache memory, also called CPU memory, is random access memory (RAM) that a computer microprocessor can access more quickly than it can access regular RAM. This memory is typically integrated directly with the CPU chip or placed on a separate chip that has a separate bus interconnect with the CPU.
  9. 9Virtual MemoryVirtual memory is a feature of an operating system (OS) that allows a computer to compensate for shortages of physical memory by temporarily transferring pages of data from random access memory (RAM) to disk storage.
  10. 10Hard Disk Drive (HDD)in a personal computer, a hard disk drive (HDD) is the mechanism that controls the positioning, reading, and writing of the hard disk, which furnishes the largest amount of data storage for the PC.
  11. 11Solid State Drive (SSD)An mSATA SSD with an external enclosure. A solid-state-drive (SSD) is a solid-state storage device that uses integrated circuit assemblies as memory to store data persistently.
  12. 12USB Flash DriveA small external flash drive that can be used with any computer that has a USB port
  13. 13CD/DVD DriveDefinition of:CD/DVD drive. CD/DVD drive. An optical disc drive that reads and writes all common CD and DVD formats. All modern optical drives that come with personal computers are CD/DVD drives. See DVD writer, CD-ROM drives and DVD drives.
  14. 14Volatile and Nonvolatile memoryTypes of memory that retain their contents when power is turned off. ROM is nonvolatile, whereas RAM is volatile. This term often refers to the CMOS memory in PCs that holds the BIOS.
  15. 15Input DevicesIn computing, an input device is a peripheral (piece of computer hardware equipment) used to provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer or information appliance. Examples of input devices include keyboards, mouse, scanners, digital cameras and joysticks.
  16. 16Output DevicesAn output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment used to communicate the results of data processing carried out by an information processing system (such as a computer) which converts the electronically generated information into human-readable form.
