Chapter 2 Review Questions
Karten in diesem Stapel (8)
- 1What are three objectives of an OS design?Convenience, efficiency and ability to evolve.
- 2What are the two modes of operation of an operating system?User mode & kernel mode.
- 3What are the advantages of multiprogramming over serial processing? In multiprogramming you can switch to another tasks while waiting for I/O operations.
- 4What is a process?A program in execution.
- 5How is the execution context of a process used by the OS?The OS uses it to supervise, control and properly execute the process. The execution context holds the registers and program counter as well as other information like the priority of the process and state.
- 6List and briefly explain five storage management responsibilities of a typical OS.Process isolation: other processes cannot interfere with memory.
Automatic allocation and management: memory is dynamically allocated and is transparent to the programmer.
Support of modular programming: possible to create, resize and destroy modules.
Protection and access control: part of memory could be set so it is accessible by other users.
Long-term storage: possibility to save data on disk etc. - 7What is time slicing? When process is preempted after a certain period of time. That is, when process is swapped out for a new one, and the old is put back on the ready queue.
- 8Describe the round-robin scheduling technique.Processes are added to ready queue on entry. Processes are popped from the queue and executed. After a specific time the running process is time-sliced and added back to the ready queue and next process is executed.
