  1. 1What is a computer system?A computer system is a collection of hardware and software that works together to complete a kind of data processing task.
  2. 2Give three reasons why computer systems are important.- it allows new ways of communicating
    - improved quality in manufacturing
    -faster access to information
  3. 3Explain two examples of a computer system.A satnav is given a destination as an input and directs you to this place as an output. It will process your input by checking the location on a map. An ATM will receive your card as an input, process the pin you are entering and give you money as an output.
  4. 4Name two input and output devices on a digital camera. The button and the microphone. The flash and the screen.
  5. 5What are the difference between General Purpose, Dedicated and Control systems?GP systems are used personally and are common and can perform a variety of tasks . Dedicated systems are used for a specific task or reason such as a ticket machine. Control systems are under management and are mostly used in manufacturing.
  6. 6What is an embedded system?A computer system that is part of a larger system.
  7. 7Name one advantage and disadvantage of an expert system. An advantage is that the knowledge it knows is more suited to you preference. A disadvantage is that the knowledge is only a narrow range.
  8. 8Give two uses of an expert system. To give a medical diagnosis or find an engineering fault.
  9. 9State the three main components of an expert system.A knowledge base, an inference engine that can make deductions with the information it has and an interface so a human can interact with the computer system.
  10. 10What is data integrity? This refers to the data being reliable and accurate.
  11. 11How can data integrity be compromised and how can you reduce this risk?Bugs and viruses can affect data integrity but backing up data regularly and using anti-virus software can prevent this from happening.
  12. 12Why can testing never be complete?Software is too complicated and testing is time consuming and expensive.
  13. 13State two ways that computers are used in medicine.-Diagnosis of diseases
    - Record keeping
  14. 14State two categories that standards apply to.-Programming Languages
    -Operating Systems
  15. 15Give three reasons why standards are important.Standards enable equipment from different manufacturers to work together and make learning new systems easier. They also reduce costs.
  16. 16What are De Facto standards?Theses standards develop over time and are important as they make file and systems accessible by anyone (QWERTY keyboard, Microsoft Word).
  17. 17What are De Jure standards? These standards are by law and allow communication because they have become universally accepted( ASCII).
  18. 18What are proprietary standards? This is standards that are owned by a company and there products are only compatible with the companies other products such as Apple.
  19. 19What are industry standards? These are companies that make standards for specific thing such as a programming language ( ANSI sets standards for programming language).
  20. 20What are open standards?Open standards are publicly available and have been produced collaboratively. They do not dominate one interest group and have no or little cost.
  21. 21What is the difference between a legal and ethical act?An ethical act is one that is morally right whereas a legal act is one that doesn't break any laws.
  22. 22State three provisions about a typical Data Protection Law.-Allow people to view the data held about them
-Only use data for a specified and lawful purpose
-Not use data in a way that may potentially cause damage or distress
  23. 23What is cyber crime?A crime committed with the aid of computers.
  24. 24State two reasons why the diposal of computers are an environmental problem. The toxic waste is released into the air and there is a waste of materials.
  25. 25State four ways in which energy can be saved in a data centre.-Solid state storage uses less energy than other storage
-Setting the air con at an optimum level
-modern screens that are less energy intensive
-having a standby mode on the computers
