- 1Solutionis a mixture of two or more substances in a single liquid phase. One constituent is usually regarded as the solvent and the others as solutes.
SOLVENT+SOLUTE=SOLUTION - 2Solutethe part of a solution that is being dissolved (usually the lesser amount)
- 3Solventthe part of a solution that dissolves the solute (usually the greater amount)
- 4Solution concentrationindicates the amount of solute in a given amount of solution or solvent
g, mg, cm3, n - 5Percent concentrationit shows the percent of the solute in 100g or 100mL solution or solvent.
- 6Weight/Weight percent concentration (w/w%)Weight/Volume percent concentration
(w/v%)
Volume/Volume percent concentration
(v/v%)
measured in mm - 7Solution densityrefers to the ratio between the weight and volume of a given solution.
Two types of density are used in practise:
Relative density (d)
Mass density (p) - 8Relative (d)a digit that shows how much the weight of a given solution is bigger than the weight of an equal volume of water
- 9Mass density (p)1L or 1mL of a given substance (solution). It is expressed in kg/m3 or g/mL
- 10Molar concentration/ molaritynumber of moles of solute per litre of solution
mol/L, M - 11MoleOne mole is the mass in grams of this amount of a substance, numerically equal to the molecular mass of the substance
- 12Millimolar concentrationnumber of millimoles of a solute in one litre of solution
mM, mmol/L - 13Micromolar concentrationnumber of micromoles of a solute in one litre of solution
- 14Nanomolar concentrationnumber of nanomoles of a solute in a litre of solution
- 15Molal concentration (Cm)number of moles of a solute in 1000 grams of solvent
Molal concentration is used when measuring the colligative properties of solutions. As these properties depend on temperature, it is more appropiate to use the weight, not the volume of a solute, as the volume also depends on temperature - 16Osmole and osmolarityused when measuring the colligative properties of solutions
- 17Osmolenumber of moles of osmotic active particles
Measured in Osm - 18Osmolaritynumber of osmoles in one liter of solution
Measured in Osm/L - 19Normal concentration, Normalitynumber of equivalents of a solute in one liter of solution
Measured in eq/L, N
1 equivalent equals 1 mole of an ion dived to its charge - 20Mixing solutionsSame solute with different conc.
