Software and secondary storage
Karten in diesem Stapel (7)
- 1OpticalIncludes CD, DVD, Blu ray. Data is burned onto the disc using a laser. Best for storing low capacity files like music, film or photos due to cheap price
- 2MagneticThe data is encoded into bits and written onto the surface as a series of changes in the direction of the magnetisation. Having moving parts makes it less durable, however.
- 3Flash/Solid StateFlash memory is solid. There are no moving parts, An SSD uses microscopic electronic switches to store data meaning it is more durable than magnetic forms of memory but generally more expensive
- 4Custom writtenis specially designed and written for a single organisation or group of users as the exact software they need may not exist
- 5Open SourceSoftware that is usually free and available to everyone. The source code is usually available allowing people to modify it to their liking
- 6ProprietarySoftware released by a company that is sold in packages. The source code is unavailable so can't be customised
- 7Off-the-shelfOff-the-shelf software is designed to provide a general set of features that a broad range of customers will find useful. The most popular and widely used software is usually off-the-shelf, eg web browsers, apps and games
