- 1what is a NIC?A network interface card which allows a device to connect to a network.
- 2where is a NIC found?in the motherboard.
- 3what are NICs used for?wireless and wired connections
- 4what is a switch?switches connect devices on a LAN. They receive data from one device and transmit it to the device on the network with the correct MAC address
- 5What is a router?routers transmit data between networks
- 6how many networks is a router connected to?they're always connect to at least two difference networks
- 7what do routers do for the internet?directing data to their destination
- 8where are routers found?in homes and businesses, to connect the LAN to the internet
- 9what are ethernet cables used for?connecting devices in a LAN.
- 10what are the most common ethernet cables?CAT e5 and CAT 6
- 11What is a 'twisted pair' cable?an ethernet cable with 4 pairs of copper wires, all twisted together to reduce internal interference.
- 12what are coaxial cables?a single copper wire surrounded by a plastic layer for insulation and metallic mesh to protect from outside interference
- 13what are fibre optic cables?cables that transmit data as light. They're high performance (and expensive) cables with no interference and can transmit over a large area.
- 14how does wireless transmit data?through radio waves
- 15how do you set up a wireless network? You need a WAP (wireless access point) device (basically a switch).
- 16how can you connect two wireless devices if they don't have wireless capability?with a pair of dongles or HDMI cable
- 17what is Wi-fi?The standard use for wireless networks.
- 18what frequencies is wi-fi?2.4Ghz and 5GHz
