L3. CT Components
Karten in diesem Stapel (18)
- 1What is CT?Cells and extracellular material (e.g. fibres, ground substance, tissue fluid)
- 2What is ground substance? What is it composed of and what is its function?Gel of variable viscosity
Composed of:
- Hyaluronic acid (glycosaminoglycans/GAG): binds water, can change permeability and viscosity of CT
Function:
- Preventing/slowing spread of microorganisms and toxic materials at sites of infections
- Medium for passage of materials, exchange of metabolites (nutrients, waste) - 3What type of fibres are found in CT?All produced by fibroblasts:
- Collagen
- Reticular
- Elastic - 4What types of cells are found in CT?1. Fibroblasts
2. Mast cells
3. Plasma cells
4. Lymphocytes
5. Macrophages - 5What do fibroblasts do?Elaborate precursors of collagenous, reticular and elastic fibres
Produce ground substance - 6What are mast cells?Contain large granules with heparin (anticoagulant), histamine (vasodilation)
- Increases permeability of capillaries allowing excess plasma to enter CT space and cause swelling - 7Describe plasma cellsHave eccentrically placed nuclei - clockface nucleus
Produce immunoglobins (antibodies) against infections - 8What do lymphocytes do?1. Initiate cell-mediated immune response (T cells)
2. Activate and differentiate to form plasma cells: provide humoral immunity (B cells) - 9What are macrophages?Phagocytosing cells of CT
- Remove particulate matter
Originate in bone marrow, circulate in blood (monocytes) and migrate into CT - 10What types of adult CT types are there?1. Loose
2. Reticular
3. Elastic
4. Dense (irregular, regular, regular elastic) - 11Describe loose CT including location and functionFew fibres, more cells and matrix (lots of ground substance and tissue fluid), some loosely woven collagen, reticular and elastic fibres
Cells: fibroblasts, adipose cells, macrophages, mast cells
Location: Spaces just deep to skin, below mesothelial lining of body cavities, adventitia of blood vessels and respiratory tract
Function: binds organs and organ components. First sites of immune response due to it being immediately below epithelia - 12Describe reticular CT, including function and locationMostly Type III collagen embedded in loose CT
Function: Form delicate networks to support various organs
Location: around fat and smooth muscles, supporting mesh in liver, lymph nodes and spleen - 13Describe elastic CT, including locationLoose bundles of elastic fibres with collagen and cartilage in between
Locations: dermis, lungs, elastic cartilage, large blood vessels - 14What is dense CT?More fibres, less matrix and cells
- 15Describe dense irregular CT, including function and locationThick collagenous bundles, irregularly woven
Cells: fibroblasts, mast cells, macrophages
Function: Tensile strength from different directions
Locations: Dermis of skin, sheath of nerves, capsules of spleen, testes and ovaries - 16Describe dense regular CT, including function and locationParallel bundles
Function: Tensile strength in 1 direction
Cells: only fibroblasts
Location: Tendons, ligaments, aponeuroses - 17Describe dense regular elastic CT, including function and locationBranching elastic fibres arranged parallel with few collagen networks
Location: Large blood vessels, ligamentum flava (spine), suspensory ligament (penis) - 18List the functions of CT1. Transport: blood vessels and lymphatics for metabolites between tissues and blood
2. Support: ligaments, tendons, rigid forms (bone, cartilage)
3. Repair: scar tissue formation after injury
4. Defence: phagocytes, antibodies, inflammatory response
5. Storage: lipids, calcium
6. Packing: between epithelium, muscle, glands
