Heat and Temperature

Karten in diesem Stapel (33)

  1. 1HeatIs the total energy of an object
  2. 2TemperatureIs the measurement of heat
  3. 3Caloric TheoryAn obsolete theory. Heat Thought as a weightless gas that could pass in and out of pores in solids and liquids
  4. 4States of matter?Solids, liquids and gas
  5. 5Heat energyIs a form of energy that transfers from matter at higher temperatures to lower temperatures
  6. 6Heat TransferThe world always tries to be equal- so heat flows from a hot body to a cold one
eg) Hot air rises, water- hot goes to cold
    Cold doesn't transfer to hot.
  7. 74 main ideas in the Particle Model of Matter1. All matter to made of tiny particles
    2. The particles of matter are always moving
    3. The particles have spaces between them
    4. Adding heat to matter makes the particles move faster.
  8. 8Potential energy -vs- Kinetic energyPotential energy- is not moving
Kinetic Energy- Moving particles or energy
  9. 9Particles in SolidsThey are not moving and are fixed
  10. 10Particles in LiquidsThey have more kinetic energy and takes the shape of the container they're in
  11. 11Particles in GasesHave even more kinetic energy and, the particles in matter are not connected and it takes a shape of the container they're in.
  12. 12Heat to solid, liquid? And reverse?- coldSolid- the particles vibrate faster and melts
Liquid- Particles move faster and liquid changes in gas- evaporation
    Reverse- Freezing, solidification, condensation
Lesson is: when you add heat, it changes
  13. 13Thermal EnergyIs the total energy (kinetic) of all particles in a given substance.
  14. 14What is the difference between thermal energy than temperature?Temperature is the average kinetic speed of movements.
Thermal Energy is the total energy
eg) A pot of soup vs A bowl of soup- they are the same temperature, but if you have more it's higher (thermal)- pot
  15. 15Heat transfer= expansion? When heat transfers from 1 object to another, the volume of each object moves up/ gets affected and it gets larger.
Change of volume- caused by heat transfer is an example of the particle model of matter.
  16. 16ExpansionWhen the thermal energy of solid increases- so does its volume
Heat-Solid eg) Balloon with heat = expand
  17. 17ContractionThe opposite of expansion. It's when the THERMAL ENERGY of solid decreases or the volume.
eg) heat transfer from the warmer solid to cooler matter.
  18. 18Thermal ExpansionThe process of expansion of a substance caused by an increase in the THERMAL ENERGY
Or something expands because of heat, liquids usually expand more than solids do, but not as much as gases do.
  19. 19Expansion jointsWere invented to deal with thermal expansion and are used on bridges, highways and between railroads tracks
  20. 20How do thermometers work?By expansion and contractions.
  21. 21ConductionIs the transfer of heat energy between substances that are in contact with each other
THE PARTICLES DO NOT MOVE- ONLY THE HEAT DOES!
    Conduction
  22. 22How does heat move in Conduction? The heat source and heat move from one end to another in ONE DIRECTION.
From areas of greater kinetic energy to less kinetic energy.
How does heat move in Conduction?
  23. 23ConductorsAre common with solids and less common in liquids and RARE in Gasses.
They are materials that allow easy transfer of heat.
eg) metals are good conductors of energy.
  24. 24InsulatorsAre materials that do not allow easy transfer of heat.
They can reduce the amount of heat that can transfer from a hotter object to a colder one.
eg) Plastic, cork, and wood- which means that they are poor conductors of heat.
  25. 25ConvectionHeat is transferred when liquid or gas particles move from one area to another. The particles heat up and move around
eg) Hot water/ cold water experiment
    Convection
  26. 26Convection CurrentHeat transfer by convection occurs when the particles in a liquid or gas move in circular patterns, called CONVECTION CURRENTS.
They form when heat transfer to liquids or gases.
    Convection Current
  27. 27The Big 3Convection, Conduction and Radiation
  28. 28What does conduction and convection rely on that radiation does not?The movement of particles, to transfer heat energy.
(Think of the sun- it reaches us with very few particles)
  29. 29RadiationIs the transfer of energy by invisible waves that can travel great distances.
Eg) When you hold your hand over a fire and it feels hot without you touching it. That heat is radiation.
    Radiation
  30. 30Radiant EnergyIs energy that is transferred from its source by radiation.
  31. 31Infrared WavesHeat is only 1 type of radiant energy- It is transferred by Invisible waves called Infrared Waves
  32. 32Light- reflections Shiny and Light Dark and Dullshiny and light- reflects light, so on a hot sunny day- you would feel cool
  33. 33—
