Digital Technology
Networks
- Sharing data, so you can share hardware , share resources
- A network is a number of devices linked together to allow them to share resources
- These resources will inlude Hardware, Software and Data
- when creating a network, it is important to consider how the devices will be connected to each other
- The connections could be arranged into different layouts
Packets
- Each packet will have a destination address, is the device that it is trying to get to
- Data is split into packets
- For devices to communicate they will send data to each other
topologies
- Mesh Network
- Advantage: more connections between devices build a more stable network
- Disadvantage: will take longer to add a new device
- Disadvantage: will be more expensive to set up
- Star Network
- Advantage: Easy to set up, easy to add a new device
- Advantage: It is reliable. If a device crashes, other devices are not effected
- Disadvantage: There are no connections between devices. If the central hub crashes then the whole network of devices will be to communicate
- Ring Network
- Advantage: It is easy to set up. Each device is only connected to its closest partner
- Disadvantage: If one of the connections/devices fail, then the network is greater disrupted
- Bus Network
- Each device on the network is connected to a central cable
- Advantage: It is easy and cheap to setup
- Disadvantage: if the central cable is damaged then the whole network will fail
- Disadvantage: If there are lots of devices the central cable can become very busy and traffic will slow down the speed of data transfer
- Mesh Network
LAN
- A LAN covers a small area such as one room or building
- School and collages, small buisness, Indie games studio, LAN party, High Street shops
- The network can share printers and files
- Local Area Network
WAN
- A WAN covers a large area such as a town or a large company
- Supermarkets, KCOM, Goverments, Banks and Cash machines
- Wide Area Network
Client server communication
- It is the relationship between two computers in which one, the client, makes a service request from another, the server. The client is dependent on the server to provide and manage the information
- When you get to google.co.uk, you are asking for google's homepage from google's servers
peer to peer communication
- In the client-server model, many users trying to access a large file, such as a film, would put strain on one server
- In the peer to peer model, many users on the network could store the same file
- Each computer can then sections of the file, sharing the workload
- Each client can download and share files with other users
Network Protocols
- TCP = Transmission Network Protocol
- IP = Internet Protocol
- HTTP = Hyper Text Transfer Protocol
- HTTPS= Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure
- FTP = File Transfer Protocol
- POP = Post Office protocol
- IMAP = Internet Message Access Protocol
- SMTP = Simple Mail Transfer Protocol
Digital Communication
- Websites
- Youtube
- Krunker
- Wikipedia
- wesites are to inform
- VoIP
- Voice over Internet Protocol
- It is referred to as Voice over Networks, Voice over Broadband
- Social Media
- WattPad

- Blogs
- Blogs could go on social media - like Facebook, Twitter or Instagrams
- Blogs could go on other websites like Youtube
- when you put blogs on the internet, there is a good chance that you cant take it down from the internet
- Websites
Image File Formats
- .raw
- .bmp
- .jpg
- this is used for when you want to put an image on a website
- it is a lossy compression
- Photographic images
- .png
- .webp
- .wmf
- .tiff
- it is a lossless compression
- it is in various forms of compression
- .eps
