1. synoptics- 1 passover John- 3 passovers

   • Death could be altered due to the calendars used
     • synoptics could compress his time of teaching
       • arranges material of chronology could show that Jesus' ministry is to do with the passion
         • Either blasphamy or right
           • more he reveals about himself the more controversy arises
           • in synoptics rides into Jerusalem and has last supper but not in John
             • no eucharistic words
             • instead there is Jesus washing feet and new commandment

2. something special about baptism in John

   • chap 1- John the baptist not baptising
     • Matthew causes a debate with baptism- divine plan
       • John doesn't mention the baptism he is the witness to testify as to who he is
         • practice of Church rooted in Jesus' actions
           • for Johannine community baptism is essential
             • no call to repentance
               • in synoptics Jesus never baptises anyone but in John he baptised
                 • After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he spent some time there with them and baptized. (3:22)

3. about physical experience of God

   • John doesn't have miracles, he has signs- that point to Jesus as Messiah
     • 6:35- bread of life (feeding 5000) either see it as a sign or not
       • over flow of bread- Jesus gives more than Moses
         • 6:51 bread identified as body
           • in John everyone misunderstands
             • 6:53-54 can be seen as eucharistic words
               • Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day"
                 • canabalism and blasphamy if taken literally

4. John 1:1-18 a strong rhythm/ prologue?/ wisdom hymn

   • John first human mentioned
   • 1-5 is rhythmic- reader is better informed than the participants
     • Jesus speaks a lot in John- word becomes flesh
       • gospel is about meeting transendant God in Christ

5. chaps 1-12 public ministry (book of signs)

   • chaps 14-17 teachings just to disciples (books of glory)
     • chaps 17 prayer
       • chaps 18-21 passion and ressurection
         • only gospel where risen Jesus makes peace with Peter- has closure

6. The Gospel of John probably would be some time after the Jewish War (66-73 CE) as rabbis took steps to restructure Judaism against all competing interpretations

7. the promise of the holy spirit is important to John

   • Holy spirit going to continue his work
     • spirit of truth- bring clarity to Jesus' teahings
       • spirit testifying on Jesus' behalf
         • breathed on disciples the spirit -Genesis images
           • "abide in me as I abide in you"
