Co-ordinate Geometry

1. Cartesian system

   • It is used to describe the position of a point in a plane
   • It is denoted by x,y
     • The lines are called the coordinate axes
       • The coordinate axes divide the plane into 4 quadrants
         • The point of intersection of axes is called origin
   • It was developed by René Déscartes

2. Requirements

   • To locate we require two perpendicular lines (horizontal and vertical)
     • The horizontal line is called x-axis
       • Distance from X axis is called its ordinate
     • The vertical line is called y-axis
       • Distance from y axis is called its abscissa

3. Coordinates of points

   • In the first coordinate coordinates of point is (+,+)
   • In the second quadrant coordinates of point are (-,+)
   • In the third quadrant coordinates of point are (-,-)
   • In the fourth quadrant coordinates of point are (+,-)

4. Equations

   • If x≠y
     • (x,y)≠(y,x)
   • If x=y
     • (x,y)=(y,x)
