   • Translators
     • (compiler, interpreter or both allows source code to be understood by the computer. If IDE has both then you can take advantage of each translators best features
       • compiler
         • translates all the source code at the same time and creates one executable file
         • Only need once to create executable
         • returns a list of errors for entire program after compiling is complete
         • Once compiled program runs quickly but compiling takes a long time
       • interpreter
         • translates and runs the source code one at a time, but doesn't create an executable file
         • needed every time you want to run the program
         • returns the first error the interpreter finds and then stops- useful for debugging
         • programs will be run more slowly because code is translated as the program runs
   • Error Diagnostics
     • Help to find and fix errors in a program,they'll tell you the location of the error and ways to fix it
   • Run-time environment
     • allows code to be run quickly in IDE. This is done by using a 'start' or 'run' button. Can help identify logic errors in the program as the programmer can see which part of the code
   • Editors
     • where code is written, most code editors have line numbering and auto-colour coding for things like strings, functions, variables and comments. good ones will have features like auto-correct and auto-indentation
   • piece of software that provides features to help a programmer to develop their program. Most IDE's will have similar features
