Unit 2 Definitions
Chemical Reaction : the process in which one or more substances undergoes a chemical change to form one or more new substances
- Neutralization Reaction : a reaction between an acid and base or an acid and carbonate compound that results in a solution with a pH closer to 7 and produces water and an ionic compound
- Acid : a substance that produces hydrogen ions when dissolved in water
- Base : a substance that produces hydroxide ions when dissolved in water
- Combustion Reaction : the burning of a hydrocarbon in the presence of ocygen to produce products such as water and carbon dioxide
- Incomplete Combustion : the burning of a hydrocarbon in a limited supply of oxygen, resulting in a combination of products of soot, carbon dioxide, water, carbon monoxide, and energy
- Metallurgy : the science of obtaining and refining metals from their ores (Application)
- Flash Smelting : separating a metal from its ore by heating it in pure oxygen to high temperatures
- Remediation : the process of removing contaminates from land or water so that it is safe for the environment (Application)
- Bioremediation : using living organisms to treat contaminate soil or water
- Neutralization Reaction : a reaction between an acid and base or an acid and carbonate compound that results in a solution with a pH closer to 7 and produces water and an ionic compound
