Ancient Greek

1. ARCHITECTURE

   • Material Used & Structure
     • Greeks used white marble which is great in terms of finishing.
       • White marble is sufficiently hard, can take a lot of load.
   • Greek Orders: Ancient Greek orders are divided into 3 orders, the 3 orders are easily recognized by their capitals:
     • Structures employed beam-column construction.
       • The structure thus formed corresponds to Dolmen type, where beam carries more of tension & the column carries more of compression.
       • The columns are constructed with cylindrical blocks called drums stacked on top of one another with metal dowels connecting the drums together.
     • Doric
       • Ionic
         • Corinthian
           • Variation in capital, shaft & base helps differentiate each column from other.
         • Easily recognized by voluted capitals.
       • Oldest of the four columns.
         • Massive, thick & short in size.
