DECIMALS

1. fractions to decimals

   • Divide bottom INTO top
     • Answer is whole number, left over goes on top,
       • what you start w/ on the bottom, stays.

2. decimals to fractions

   • Put the decimal # on top
     • Count # of dec. places - put that # of 0's on bottom
       • "1" in front
   • Whole # stays whole #

3. add/subtract

   • Line up the decimals
     • Add zeros to match the # of decimal places in all #s being added
     • If no decimal in the #, it goes at the end of the number.
     • If no decimal in the number, it goes at the end.
     • Add 0's after the decimal so all #s have same # of digits.
       • Estimate the answer & see if it matches.

4. multiply

   • Do NOT line up decimals
   • Ignore the decimals until done
   • multiply the #s & THEN count number of dec. placesl
     • Count (from the right) the # of decimal places
       • Estimate the answer & see if it matches.

5. divide

   • Decimal point in answer goes above the dividend - ignore it when dividing
   • a. When dividing by decimal #, multiply the # by multiples of 10 to create whole #.
     • b. Multiply the dividend by the same multiple of 10 & refer to 1)
       • Estimate answer & see if it matches.
