1. Operating Systems

   • UI - provides user with a friendly interface in which they can conduct basic tasks such as lading software and manageing files
   • Memory Management: allows user to control where files are stores
   • Peripheral Management: allows user to control connected peripherals (printers etc)
   • Multi-Tasking: Launch several programs at once and use them simultaneously
   • Security: OS maintains security and access rights of users

   • Read Only Memory
   • Non-Volatile
   • Contains BIOS (Basic Input Output System) -firmware for the motherboard
     • Contains BOOTSTRAP - the program that instruct the computer on how to boot and load the operating system
       • Process happens between powering on and beeping to say the OS is loading - this is known as POST (Power On Self Test)
