Parts of The Human Brain
- The Four Lobes
- Frontal Lobe
- At the front of the brain
- The part lying just behind the
forehead is the prefrontal cortex
- The Executive Control Centre
- These lobes deal with planning and thinking
- Self-will area
- Reasoning and Judgment
- Temporal Lobe
- Above the ears
- Speech centre is only on the left side
- These deal with sounds and music
- Face and object recognition
- Damage to this area could
result in: speech difficulty,
memory acquisition, long
and short term memory loss
- Parietal Lobe
- Near the top of the brain
- spatial orientation, calculation, facial recognition
- Co-coordinating different senses, attention and awareness
- Occipital Lobe
- At the back of the skull
- used almost exclusively for visual
processing (anything to do with the eyes)
- Damage to this area may result in: hallucinations, inability to see colour
- Motor Cortex
- Housed between the frontal lobe
and parietal lobe (closet to the front)
- Controls body movement
- Somatosensory Cortex
- Behind the motor cortex
- Processes touch signals from
various parts of the body
- Freud Tore (his) Pants Off
- The Brain Stem
- Located at the base of the skull
- Controls things like heartbeat, respiration, body temperature
- Also houses the RAS (reticular activating system
- Responsible for the brain's alertness
- The Thalamus
- All incoming sensory information (SI)
(except smell) goes through here
- From here, the SI is sent to
other parts of the brain for
further processing
- It is involved in many cognitive activities as well as memory
- Bandura Totally Roughhoused Clowns
- The Limbic System
- Housed above the brain stem
- The Hypothalamus
- Nestled just below the thalamus
- Monitors the internal signals
- Controls the release of hormones
- The Hippocampus
- Located near the bottom of the limbic system
- Consolidates learning as well as transferring
memories from working memory to long-term memory
- The Amygdala
- Attached to the end of hippocampus
- Controls emotions, especially fear
- Pituitary
- Helps regulate hormones
- Hungary Hounds Ate Pavlov
- Cerebellum and Cerebrum
- Cerebrum
- Thinking, memory, speech, muscular movement
- Cerebellum
- Coordinates movement
