Network

  1. Peer-to-peer

    • In a peer-to-peer network, al the computers are equal in status: no computer is more important than any other. The computers on a peer-to-peer network probably have similar specifications and are such as you might find in an office environment.
  2. Client server

    • A client-serer network is organised so that one computer acts as a server and all the other computers are clients that use the shared resources on the server. The server is probably a larger and more powerful computer with more memory and backing storage capacity than the client computers.
  3. LAN

    • Local area network this is a group of computers connected to one network in a close area.
  4. WAN

    • Wide area network this is where a group of computers can be connected around the world or a long distance
  5. Network topology

    • Star
      • All the computers in a star network are connected to a central hub, which directs the flow of data, or to a central computer that acts as the file server
    • Ring
      • The computers in a ring network are connected to each other in a loop. This topology is often used in a peer-to-peer network because there is no need for one computer to be more powerful than the rest, as there is in a star network.
    • Bus
      • The simplest type of network is where each computer is connected to the computers on either side of it.
  6. Internet

    • The internet is a network of computers across the world using existing telecommunications such as telephone lines and satellite links
  7. Interanet

    • An intranet is a network providing similar services to the internet but within one company or school.
  8. Extranet

    • An extranet is a part of an intranet that is able to be accessed by authorised members of the public over the internet.
  9. Security

    • Password: every authorised user of a network is given a username and a password. These need to be entered whenever the user logs on to the network and the operating system only allows access to the network if the combination of username and password is correct.
    • Virus protection: computers on a network connected to the internet may have a problem with viruses being introduced on download files or on emails. to prtect all the computers on the network, the internet server, the computer linked to the internet should run virusprotection software to prevent any attempted attack by viruses
    • Access rights: there may be resources that are accessible only by some people and different levels of security may be used. it may be possible to limit the access rights to the file.
    • Encryption: if data stored on a computer is encrypted, then it is meaningless to someone who is not authorised to access it.
    • Firewall: a firewall is software that runs on a computer to help prevent hackers from gaining access to the computer or a network of computers. The firewall monitors all data traffic going in and outs of the computer or network.
    • Back ups: this is the most important one because if for any reason you lose your phone, get hacked ect. you are able to back up your information and factory reset your phone so its able to get all your data back without anyone accessing it.
