1. what is a firewall?

   • a firewall is a device that protects an IT system from unauthorised access by blocking 'bad' network trafficking

2. firewalls can be hardware or software based. firewlls work by using a set of rules that filter and reject unwanted or suspicious network packets arriving from a remote network

3. hardware

   • hard ware firewalls usually exist by sitting between an external network and a internal connection
   • firewalls form the first line of defence in protecting digital systems from external threats such as cyber or virus attacks

4. didgital system

   • a digital system such as a desktop computer can also have a fire wall service , it blocks network data travelling in and out
   • additional options may stop certain applications from sending or receiving certain packets of network data

5. YouTube

   • for example you may not be able to access YouTube in school to prevent distractions from work
   • big organisations block youtube and social media sites such as: accsess control lists and local area networks
