Operating systems

  1. Managing Resources

    • Machine code is written from the OS instead of to each piece of hardware.
      • The programmer doesn't need to worry about what hardware the user has as the OS will deal with it.
    • Each PC has a different combinations of hardware and OS allow you to use most codes with most combinations.
      • An OS runs directly to the hardware.
  2. Resources

    • Peripherals
      • Device attached to a computer
        • Memory Stick
        • Web Camera
        • Keyboard
        • Mouse
    • Printing
      • The operating system will spool your order to print until the printer is ready.
        • This means the computer doesn't need to be affected by the computer running out of ink or not being ready to print.
    • Backing stores
      • Storage devices are used to keep backups of important files.
        • Operating systems can manage this for the user.
          • OS will make regular backups in the format of the appropriate device.
    • File Compression
      • Storing data in a way that uses less space.
        • OS can compress data as its saved and decompresses when its loaded
          • Saves more space
    • Disk de-fragmentation
      • Rearranging file fragments on a physical disk surface to improve loading times.
    • Memory
      • RAM
        • RAM is split into pages to ensure there is enough memory to run the programs
          • Each page is presented to the program as if it is the only memory available.
            • This prevents programs from snooping other programs data.
    • Processes
    • Security
