Static routes are very common and do not require the same amount of processing and overhead as dynamic routing protocols.
- Scope of remote networks
- Manually
- Dynamically
- Why use static routing?
- Static routes are not advertised through the network, which increases security
- The route that a static route uses to send data is known
- Static routes consume less bandwidth than dynamic routing protocols. No CPU cycle is used to calculate and communicate routes
- Scope of remote networks
When to use static routes
- It facilitates the maintenance of the routing table in smaller networks in which it is not expected to grow significantly.
- Provides routing to internal route networks and where you are. A network of internal routes is one that is accessed through a single route and whose router has only one neighbor
- Use a single default route to represent a route to any network that does not have a more specific match with another route in the routing table. The default routes are used to send traffic to any destination that is beyond the next upstream router.
types of static routes
- Standard static route
- Static routes are useful for connecting to a specific remote network.
- Default static route
- A default route is a route that matches all packets and is used by the router if a packet does not match any other more specific route in the routing table
- Summary static route
- The destination networks are contiguous and can be summarized in a single network address.
- All static routes use the same exit interface or the IP address of the next hop
- Static floating route
- Static floating routes are static routes that are used to provide a backup route to a static or dynamic main route, in the event of a link failure. The floating static route is used only when the main route is not available.
- Standard static route
Ip route command
- Static routes are configured with the global configuration ip route command
Next jump route
- Route of the next jump
- only the IP address of the next hop is specified
- ip route 192.168.2.0 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1
- only the IP address of the next hop is specified
- Static route connected directly
- only the router's exit interface is specified
- ip route 172.16.3.0 255.255.255.0 s0/0/0
- only the router's exit interface is specified
- Static route specified completely
- specify the IP address of the next hop and the exit interface
- ip route 172.16.3.0 255.255.255.0 g0/1 172.16.2.1
- specify the IP address of the next hop and the exit interface
- Route of the next jump
Verification of a static route
- show ip route
- show ip route static
- show ip route Red
Setting a default static route IPV4
- Ip Route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 172.168.2.2
Setting a default static route IPV6
- IPV6 Route ::/0 2001:d88:ACAD:4 ::2
