- Commonly diagnosed between ages of 15-35
- Can affect thought processes, physical function and perception or reality
- Some may encounter symptoms persistently or sporadically
- Positive Symptoms: symptoms in addition to normal functioning
- Hallucinations - no one else can perceive. Can be auditory or visual.
- Also olfactory (nasty smells) or tactile (feeling of being touched.
- Delusions - irrational beliefs that seem real but aren't true.
- Paranoid Delusions - may involve being persecuted by others.
- Delusions of Grandeur - exaggerated beliefs about ones abilities.
- Negative Symptoms: symptoms that involve a reduction in normal functioning
- Speech Poverty - reduction in amount or quality of what is spoken.
- May involve reduced verbal fluency, language complexity or a delay in verbal responses.
