1.4 Wireless and Wired Network Version 2
LAN
- Local Area Network
- Computers connected together over a small geographical area
- A building
- Home
- School
- Own infrastructure and network hardware due to distance and pracicalities
WAN
- Wide Area Network
- Computers connected together over a large geographical area
- Several buildings/sites
- Town
- County/Country
- Uses external hardware and external infrastructure e.g. use of The Internet and Satellites
Internet + WWW
- Accessible, store and look things up on there
- World Wide Web
- Isn't accessible
- Files, programs and websites
- Infrastructure
- Raters
- Servers and hardware
Client-server
- Provides all services on the network through a central computer
- Network relies on central server
- Data/files are sent to the server and then transferred to another device
- Expensve to build and maintain
- Requires a dedicated network manager
- Recieves and processes data from all computers
Peer to Peer
- Cheap to set up and computers are needed to be maintained individually
- All computers have equal status
- No additional hardware required
- Each device can act as a client and server
Keywords
- Packet
- Data transmitted over a network is broken down into packets
- Contains the IP address of the sender and reciever
- Contains a sequence number (A certain life time on the internet)
- WAP
- Wireless Access Point
- Has wires connected to the point
- Allows a person to access the internet/network wirelessly
- Part of the internet
- Performs better with less interference like walls
- Closer to the device has a strong signal
- Network performance
- The speed of the message which can be sent or a document can be retrieved
- Affected by the number of devices on the network or of the bandwidth transmission medium
- Transmission media
- A pathway that carries the information from sender to receiver by cable, wires or electromagnetic signals
- Modem
- MODulate and DEModulate
- Packet
More keywords
- Hub
- Can only work with one device at a time
- Router
- Transmit data between at least two different networks
- Switch
- Works with a lot of devices at the same time
- VPN
- Virtual Private Network
- Sends data over a WAN
- Hub
Bandwidth
- The amount data that can be transmitted in a period of time
- Impact bandwidth can have on the performance of a network...
- Large number of users will result in the bandwidth being limited
- Insufficient bandwidth reduces quality of a video/photo/etc
- Larger amount of available bandwidth means more data that can be transmitted
Fibre Optic
- Transmit data through light so it does not suffer from electrical interference
- Has a higher bandwidth than copper cables
Cloud Computing
- Automatically backs up data
- Able to share data/files within the cloud
The 8 Principles of DPA
- Fairly
- Obtained
- Law
- Holders of the data provide full transparency about how they wish to use the data, as well as ensure their data is only used in ways the person would expect
- Adequate
- The amount of data held must be the necessary amount for it's purpose
- Accurate
- Data must be kept up to date. The data needs to be changed when it is inaccurate
- Kept
- Data must be kept for no longer as it should be (Data must be deleted or removed). This allows other data to be managed easier
- Secure
- Data must be kept secure within a physical and technical system to keep information safe and secure from security risks
- Transfer
- Country that the data is being sent to needs to have a robust DPA and the workers maintaining the data must be properly trained and checked
- Specific
- Data should only use the personal data for the purpose they originally said it would be used for
- Fairly
DNS Server
- Domain Name System/Server
- Contains all the domain names and their IP addresses
- Packets are transmitted as IP addresses. This is why we need to know the IP address to access a website
- Without DNS, we need to type in the IP address all the time
