Phrasal Verbs

1. Are a combination of a verb and a participle (adverb or preposition), that creates a meaning different from the original verb.

   • Back up = support, blow up = explode, break down = stop functioning or get upset, calm down = relax.
     • My car broke down so I broke down in tears (first broke + down = stopped functioning; second = got upset).
   • Transitive
     • Can be followed by an object.
       • I blew up my car. (Blew + up = explode, car is the object).
   • Intransitive
     • Cannot be followed by an object.
       • This morning my car blew up.
